RECYCLE AT HOME = DEPENDS
‘Real’ Christmas trees can be recycled from home:
- Your council offers a free collection service for real Christmas trees over a two-week period in January – keep an eye out for details announced in December
- Subscribers to the Garden Waste Collection Service can chop their real Christmas tree up and put it in their garden waste wheelie bin ready for collection
- Alternatively, chop up your real Christmas tree to create a winter shelter for animals in your garden or add it to your home compost heap
‘Artificial’ or ‘fake’ Christmas trees cannot be recycled from home:
- Artificial trees are made from a combination of materials and therefore cannot be easily recycled
- Use your artificial tree for as long as possible and then either donate it or dispose of it responsibly (see below).
RECYCLE OUT OF HOME = DEPENDS
- Real Christmas Trees can be recycled for free at your council-run Household Reuse and Recycling Centre
- Artificial trees cannot be recycled and should be put in your rubbish bin or taken to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre for disposal
BE A GREAT RECYCLER…
- When recycling your real Christmas tree, make sure you remove all decorations and pots
- Make sure you only put your tree out for collection on the date your council tells you to – ensuring you don’t block the pavement
WASTE LESS…
- Artificial Christmas trees in good condition can be donated to a local charity shop (find your local shops on the Charity Retail Association website) or given away via the Freegle or Freecycle websites
