Residents love their local Recycling Centre

1 September 2017

Residents in the four London boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton are very satisfied with the services provided at their local Household Reuse and Recycling Centres.

A survey of more than 6,700 site users over the last 12 months has revealed that:

  •  98% say they feel safe on the sites
  •  97% are happy with the greeting they received on arrival and the general helpfulness of the site staff
  •  97% are satisfied with the cleanliness of the sites
  •  96% are satisfied with the length of time they had to queue
  •  92% are satisfied with the usefulness of the signs on the sites

There are six Household Reuse and Recycling Centres (HRRC’s) located across the four boroughs.  All are operated by Veolia on behalf of the South London Waste Partnership.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, Chair of the South London Waste Partnership Joint Committee said:

“This is really fantastic news – local people are clearly very happy with the way their local HRRC is being run.  That is certainly good to know and this feedback is vital in ensuring we continue to provide high quality services to our residents by identifying site-specific issues and dealing with them quickly.   This very proactive approach to contract management is paying dividends as not only is satisfaction high, but it has also improved over the 12-month period.”

Christine Stacey, Contract Manager for Veolia in South London, added:

“We are delighted with these findings as we have made a significant investment in improving these sites; Purley Oaks HRRC in Croydon being an example.  We can see that these changes have been popular with site users and we’ll continue to conduct the surveys with residents to ensure we take on board feedback that will drive further improvements.”

Notes to Editors

  • The South London Waste Partnership is made up of four London Boroughs (Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton) who are working together to provide improved and more cost-effective waste management services to their residents
  • In October 2015, the South London Waste Partnership awarded a contract to Veolia to manage the six Household Reuse and Recycling Centres (HRRCs) – more commonly known as ‘the tip’ – located across the Partnership region
  • On behalf of the Partnership, Veolia is responsible for:
    • General management of the six sites – staffing, equipment and site layout improvements
    • The transportation of all materials, and
    • The recycling, treatment, and/or disposal of waste collected at all of the HRRC sites (excluding green and residual waste, which is handled by Viridor)
  • The Partnership monitors the contract with Veolia using three key performance indicators:
    • Site user experience (measured through satisfaction surveys)
    • Health and safety
    • Recycling rate achieved – the target is a 70% recycling rate at each of the six sites
  • Information about your local HRRC, including location, opening times and what materials you can recycle/dispose of there, are available from your local council’s website.
