Recycle at home = Yes
The majority of homes in the SLWP region can recycle food waste (including used tea bags, tea leaves and coffee grounds) from home. Any food waste should be placed in the dedicated food waste bin. It is collected every week by your local council for recycling.
Recycle out of home = No
Food waste cannot currently be recycled at your council-run Household Reuse and Recycling Centre.
Be a great recycler…
- Use a small kitchen caddy to store your food waste indoors. When full, transfer it to your larger outdoor food waste bin ready for collection
- Remember to lock the lid on your outdoor food waste bin to stop foxes and other animals getting in
- Line your indoor kitchen caddy with old newspaper or biodegradable (compostable) liners – please do not use plastic bags
- If your food waste caddy or bin is missing or damaged, contact your council for a replacement
- If in doubt, leave it out. Don’t let your enthusiasm to recycle contaminate a whole truck load of recycling – see What is ‘contamination’ and why is it important?
- If you live in a flat and do not have food waste recycling facilities, speak to your landlord or managing agent
