Recycle at home = No
Polystyrene cannot currently be recycled using your council’s recycling collection service. It should be put in your rubbish bin.
This includes:
- Polystyrene packaging (used to protect items in transit)
- Foam packaging
- Fast food and take-away containers
Recycle out of home = No
Polystyrene is not easily recycled because it breaks into very small pieces (beads) and clogs up recycling machinery. It should be put in your rubbish bin. If you have large amounts, you will need to take it to you council-run Household Reuse and Recycling Centre for disposal.
Waste less…
- Try and avoid buying food and drink which comes in polystyrene – many takeaways and fast food outlets have switched to recyclable packaging options like plastic, foil or even plant-based containers
- Avoid buying items that are overly-packaged (particularly when shopping online)
