Recycle at home = No
Gas bottles, canisters, cylinders and cartridges cannot be recycled using your council’s recycling collection service.
Do not put gas bottles, canisters, cylinders or cartridges in your rubbish bin – they can explode when crushed in the back of the collection vehicle or when treated at the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility. This can cause injury and fires. This includes:
- Nitrous oxide (NOX or ‘laughing gas’) bottles (pictured above)
- BBQ and patio heaters, LPG bottles (butane and propane – e.g. Calor gas)
Recycle out of home = Depends
Nitrous oxide gas bottles can be taken to your local council-run Household Reuse and Recycling Centre for recycling. Please speak to a member of site staff who will show you where to put them.
Other types of gas bottles are not accepted at the HRRCs, except for the Kimpton Parkway HRRC site in Sutton (please note, Kimpton Parkway HRRC can only be used by Sutton residents).
- For advice about Calor Gas bottles, visit the Calor Gas refill, exchange and return website
- For gas cylinders other than Calor Gas, read the advice on the Liquid Gas UK website or speak to the retailer you purchased the gas cylinder from and ask them for advice.
